Earsight microphones are intended for use on portable recorders.
Below are some guidelines on how to use earsight mics to get the most out of them and keep them for as long as possible:

  • Set the recording gain as low as possible and then turn it up. This allows you to keep some headroom if a sound event has a higher dynamic range, this will help you avoid saturation. This prevents the appearance of background noise which increases with the gain (this depends a lot on the quality of the recorder).
  • Avoid tapping on the microphone to check if there is sound, this does not damage the microphone but can cause hearing damage.
  • Do not disconnect the jack or XLR by pulling on the cable.
  • Do not step on the cable as this could damage the connection between the cable and the capsule (the most fragile part of the microphone).
  • Be careful not to pull on the cable when you want to disassemble the 3D adapter.

PERFORMANCES:

Earsight mics are very close in term of sound than microphones equipped with EM272 capsules, they are more sensitive and the big difference is the quality of components (cables, jacks, soldering…) and service that Immersivesoundscapes provides (custom shop, cable lenght on demand…)

VERSIONS:

  • XLR power supply:
48V phantom only for optimal performance for compatible recorders.
  • PIP power supply:
2 to 10V (10V being close to optimal capsule performance for best signal to noise ratio), for recorders equipped with 3.5mm mini jack in providing Plug In Power (PIP).

STEREO SPACING:

These are omnidirectional capsules, ORTF type mounting is not necessary, the best results are in A/B pickup, the 2 capsules parallel, 20cm apart. The optimal spacing depends on the subject being recorded, a larger spacing can be interesting for a quiet soundscape, but one should always avoid a caricatural stereo image.
