Cardioid microphones

Cardioid microphones are useful when you want to isolate particular sounds. Unlike omnidirectional microphones, their sensitivity decreases as you move away from the main axis, thus greatly limiting sounds coming from behind the subject. They also have the particularity of being more sensitive in the low frequencies as you approach the subject.
They can be arranged in various configurations, such as ORTF, NOS… I discuss these different set-ups on the HELP page.
Given their design, the use of windshields is almost essential for field recording.
